Cycle Training to National Standard
The type of cycling training you may well have heard of is Cycling Proficiency run in schools for Year 6 pupils. This training, is based on The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Cycling Proficiency Awarded scheme.
The National Cycle Training Standard was created in response to an increased number of cyclists on the road and a requirement to set a uniform teaching standard across the country run by professional. Cycling groups like CTC & British Cycling with RoSPA and Department of Trainsport developed the standard. In Sept’06. In 2007 a pilot award scheme was launched called Bikeability and in April’07 this was launched nationwide.
Around the country all providers of cycle training, from Local authorities to independent trainers were invited to take part in training their staff to the National Cycling Standard.
Training
We offer a full range of cycle training courses for individuals, families, and groups. Our professional and dedicated instructors have successfully trained 4,000 adults and children to enjoy safe cycling. All our courses are based on the National Cycle Training Standard.

Level 1
The Level 1 syllabus allows the trainee to improve their cycling skills in a traffic free area. The course is idea for those who want to learn to cycle or to gain conformance in their cycling skills before going onto Level 2.
Level 2
The Level 2 syllabus allows the trainee to improve their cycling skills on low traffic roads. The course is idea for those who have complete Level 1 or have these cycling skills and wish to improve and gain conformance in their cycling skills with traffic.
Level 3
The Level 3 course syllabus allows the cyclist to improve their cycling skills on more complicated road layouts with increase road traffic. The course is idea for those who have complete Level 2 or wish to improve their cycling skills and gain conformance in with increased traffic volume. Many cyclists use this course as part of their personal training for a cycling holiday or cycle challenge ride.
Courses
One of the aims of Cycling Now is to encourage more people to enjoy the freedom of safe cycling through cycle training. You might want to start cycling for the first time, find safe routes to work, enjoy pleasure cycling in a group or as a family, train for a cycle challenge or just use your bike to get around town. All our courses are based on the National Standard for Cycle Training.
Below is a list of courses we run and feel confident there is one for you. If not we also run bespoke courses you fit your exact requirements. Some of the courses attract funding to help reduce costs to participants.
1 To 1 or 2 To 1 Courses
These courses are idea for whose wanting to learn to ride and for those wanting to improve their cycling skills to take longer trips or train for a cycling challenge or holiday.
Commuter Rides
The course is idea for those who want to start cycling to work. The best route is not always the way you might drive to work. The course builds on confidence and the use of traffic free areas like cycle paths.
Group Courses
We run a series of group cycle training courses. These courses are idea for those who like the company of other cyclists at their level, enjoy a social event and want to learn to cycle or gain greater confidence cycling. Most courses are over 4 to 8 sessions of 2 hours in length. The courses are held at weekends and during the week, either in school time or evening in the summer.
Family Courses
Many families like to get out on their bikes at weekends. This course helps with the techniques required for group riding and planning rides. We also cover checking bikes over before starting, trackside repairs and what on a ride.
Mountain Bike Training Rides for Beginners
The course is idea for those who what to start riding off road and explore the country side. We start straight away with a ride from Barbury Castle. Our instructors brief the riders at the start and as we ride over the Marlborough Downs we demonstrate trial riding techniques, track side repairs and observance of Countryside Code.
